Sabotage Attacks Cripple Italy’s High-Speed Railway System

(MENAFN) Italy's high-speed railway system suffered severe disruptions Saturday following suspected sabotage attacks, the fourth wave of tampering this month, prompting Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini to denounce the incidents as "criminal acts."

Critical routes connecting Rome-Naples and Rome-Florence experienced significant interference in what officials characterized as fresh sabotage operations, coinciding with the Winter Olympics Games currently hosted by Italy.

Law enforcement verified deliberate tampering of a manhole in Rome's Salaria district, which caused cable damage through burning, an Italian news agency reported. Investigators have launched a formal inquiry.

A technical malfunction was documented in Capena, while a third disruption occurred along Via di Salone on Rome's periphery.

Salvini, serving simultaneously as transport minister, issued a forceful condemnation of the disturbances.

"Surveillance has been increased and we have stepped up inspections to root out these criminals, hoping that no one downplays or justifies criminal acts that put people's lives at risk," Salvini wrote on US-based social media platform X.

Earlier in the week, an anarchist organization accepted responsibility for three attempted sabotage operations targeting Italian railway infrastructure on February 7—the opening day of competitive events at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.

The coordinated attacks resulted in extended delays lasting multiple hours across the network.
