China Urges Addressing ‘Root Cause’ of Iran War in Talks with UK Adviser

(MENAFN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday emphasized the need to tackle the "root cause" of the conflict in Iran during a meeting with UK adviser Jonathan Powell in Beijing, according to reports.

Wang outlined China’s "objective and impartial stance," warning that the spillover effects of the situation in Iran are "widening" and that a prolonged conflict would only result in additional casualties and serious consequences. He urged all parties “not to add fuel to the fire,” to address the underlying causes, and to return the matter to the path of political resolution through “dialogue and negotiation.”

Highlighting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to China earlier this year, Wang said it shows that establishing a "long-term, consistent, and comprehensive strategic partnership" between Beijing and London is "the will of the people" and reflects the demands of the times.

“It also shows that as long as both sides work in the same direction and engage in constructive dialogue, challenges and problems can be properly addressed,” he added.

Wang further encouraged implementing leader-level agreements, promoting exchanges at all levels, deepening cooperation across various sectors, and effectively managing differences to strengthen bilateral relations.

Powell expressed the UK’s readiness to enhance communication and collaboration, aiming to develop a "long-term, stable, and comprehensive strategic partnership" with China.
